· Keep mufflers and spark arresters on lawn equipment in proper working order and watch out for rocks and metal when bush hogging or mowing (sparks can be created by a blade on mowing equipment hitting rocks or metal and this can result in a fire).

· Avoid driving or parking vehicles in grassy areas where tall, dry grass comes into contact with hot pollution control equipment under vehicles.
 
· Always stay by the grill/BBQ pit when cooking.  Your grill/BBQ pit may stay hot for a long time after you have stopped cooking and it requires close supervision until it has completely cooled.  Keep children and pets away from the grill.  Keep grills at least ten feet away from other objects, including the house and any shrubs or bushes.
 
· If you smoke cigarettes or cigars dispose of butts properly (never litter).  Douse cigarette and cigar butts with water before dumping them in the trash.
 
· Gasoline is very dangerous. Inside a garage or home, gasoline vapors can explode with just a tiny spark. If you must keep gasoline at home, it should be stored a special safety container. If you can, keep the container in an outdoor shed away from your home. Close all the openings. Never bring or use gasoline indoors. Use it as a motor fuel only.
 
· Keep alleys clear of trash and debris, maintain vegetation in alleys, and don’t park in alleys.
 
A special note pertaining to alleys:
It is important that we are aware of the fire risk associated with the alleys in our neighborhood.  Much of the vegetation in our alley ways is overgrown and/or dead and brown. One careless use of a barbecue pit/grill or the careless flick of a cigarette butt could be disastrous to our neighborhood.  Parking in the alleys also creates an increased risk due to concerns associated with the potential spark from the undercarriage or tailpipe of a car and the increased risk of fire potential with oils shed from vehicles.  (Reminder: Alleys in the neighborhood should never be blocked off, they are intended to be used by residents for garage access or private use.  They are to be maintained by each homeowner from the center of the alley back to the property line. The city can site the whole block to get it cleared if necessary
